How should you store marijuana seeds to avoid problems?

Cannabis seeds, like an already developed plant, need the right conditions, which we should categorically provide them. Poorly stored cannabis seeds can result in a less abundant crop or prevent the plant from germinating at all. In this article we will give you some useful tips and tricks on how to store your seeds.

The first factor - the right humidity

The moisture in the air is very important for a good development of the plant. The inside of the seed is filled with a nutrient substance that takes up the moisture present in the air. Under its influence, the nutrients dissolve and react with oxygen, releasing water and heat. High humidity promotes rapid combustion of the nutrients contained in the seeds, which reduces the likelihood of proper germination. The recommended air humidity should oscillate around 9%. These conditions are favourable for the long-term storage of seeds. In addition, seeds are adversely affected by changes in the environment, so it is worth limiting their movement.

The second factor - temperature

Cannabis seeds are usually stored at low temperatures but they need to be properly prepared. First of all, they need to be dried thoroughly, since excess humidity inside them when cold can damage the seeds. The best place to store seeds for a long time is a fridge or a freezer. One thing we have to remember is the right temperature, which in a fridge should be around 40C. Frozen seeds should not be thawed and refrozen too often, because these actions remain unfavourable for the seeds. The container should be opened when it reaches room temperature, so as not to expose the contents to too much moisture, which as we know has a negative impact. If not the refrigerator, then where? We can successfully use a drawer or any other place that remains dry, cool and dark.

The third factor - lighting

Light during storage should be minimal, because too much of it stimulates the germination process. In order to prolong the life of the seeds, as well as to increase the chances of proper development of the future plant, it is recommended to store in dark places.

Problems that affect seeds

One of the most common problems that affect our seeds is mold, which is the result of improper drying. How to check if the seeds have been dried properly? Simply place the seeds in a container and check if there is moisture on the inside. If there is moisture on the inside, remove the seeds and continue drying. Before closing the seeds for a long time we should check if there are any insects among them. Their presence poses a threat to our seeds, as insects can easily damage them.

Shelf life

Depending on the place of storage, seeds have different levels of viability. When seeds are stored at room temperature, they retain their properties for up to 12 months. Seeds stored in a refrigerator will successfully maintain their freshness for 2-3 years. On the other hand, seeds kept in the freezer can lie in it for up to 20 years. Undoubtedly, this is the best way to ensure long-lasting freshness and quality of seeds.

What to store them in?

The basic criterion that every container should meet is the tightness. As we already know seeds do not like too high temperature and humidity. Smaller quantities of seeds can be successfully stored in a container from photographic film or plastic containers for food. If your crop is larger you can use jars or plastic bags. To facilitate the process of storage on each container we can write useful information such as species and date. During the storage of the seeds can be helpful silica gel. One sachet of this agent will successfully maintain the appropriate humidity inside the packaging. Moreover, deciding on the sachets, it is worth vacuum closing them.
